What to do in Lagos ?

Ponto da Piedade

Ponto da Piedade is a truly stunning beach. This natural wonder is located south of the previous center of Lagos and the cliffs are what make this place so impressive. The cliffs have an ochre color and the piles made of red and yellow limestone only make this spot more impressive, as they can be as tall as 20 meters! There are multiple ways to visit Ponto da Piedade. You could go by boat or on a kayak for example. This gives you the opportunity to enter caves and go underneath natural arches as well. You can also go by foot, which will give you the opportunity to descend on a staircase in the cliff itself. At the top of the staircase, you will have a fantastic view of the land as well!

Old Lagos

Another fun highlight to visit during your trip to Lagos is Old Lagos. This town is actually an UNESCO World Heritage Site with a history dating back to the 12th century! In the historic center, you can stroll through the narrow streets and discover new highlights at every corner! There are plenty of monuments and impressive building to visit for example. In Old Lagos, you will find plenty of tourist spots, like the churches of Santo António and Santa Maria or the Gil Eanes square.

Benagil cave tour

If you want to do something a bit more adventurous, we suggest you go on a Benagil cave tour in Lagos! Benagil is easily one of the most impressive caves at the sea in Portugal and perhaps even in Europe! You can start the boat tour in Lagos itself and from here it’s about a 20 to 25 minute tour to the cave. Not only will you be visiting the Benagil cave, but you get a great view of Algar de Benagil as well. You and the rest of the passengers will also be shown some other caves along the Algarve coast, which makes this tour perfect if you love looking at impressive rock formations! On the way back from Benagil, you will pass the beach of Meia Praia as well, which is also stunning. When you go on this Benagil cave tour however, don’t forget to bring a jacket as it can be quite windy on board.

Another really fun activity that’s perfect for families as well is a visit to the zoo of Lagos. In this amazing zoo, you can look at more than 150 different animal species that are all living in their naturalistic habitats. You can walk throughout the zoo at your own pace and look at all of the amazing animals, but there are plenty of activities as well. You and your family can look at multiple animal feedings or go to the bat enclosure for example. There’s also a penguin beach that you can visit during your trip to Zoo de Lagos.
